Caganer, a Catalan tradition

The Catalan Caganer is one of the most traditional and unique nativity scene figures in Catalonia. The Caganer depicts a man wearing a red Catalan hat, known as ‘barretina’, and a Catalan scarf, who is shown pooping! In Catalonia, it is a common practice to include this figure in Christmas nativity scenes.

The origins of the Caganer are somewhat uncertain, with different legends arising from various villages and communities. Folklorist Joan Amades suggests that the character of the Caganer in the popular nativity scene is linked to fertilization rituals found among many European cultures.

Other legends trace the origin of the Caganer to the baroque period, spanning the 16th to 18th centuries, a time when guilds were prominent. This era was marked by a strong emphasis on realism, particularly in still life and scenes that captured the essence of village life. This is when depictions of working conditions, as well as indoor and outdoor scenes, gained prominence as artistic themes. And it is, also, believed that this is also where the figure may have appeared.

About the Caga Tió tradition

The Tió de Nadal is a Catalan tradition with hundreds of years of history. It became popular between the 17th and 18th centuries in the towns and villages of Catalonia, Aragon, and Occitanie. Many families, after having the log “poop” gifts, would burn it in their fireplaces to warm up in the company of loved ones during Christmas.

Years have passed since the first Christmas log appeared, but the tradition of the Tió de Nadal is more alive than ever in Catalonia.

How does the tradition work?

• Each household acquires a Tió de Nadal before Christmas.
• Kids feed the Tió de Nadal throughout December with fruit, milk, cookies, and all kinds of foods. This way, the log will have a full belly, and it will “poop” many presents on Christmas Eve.
• Families and friends gather on Christmas Eve.
• The children congregate in a room, reciting poems and singing songs, while the Tió de Nadal prepares to “poop” gifts. The Christmas log should be covered with a blanket.
• Next, the whole family “hit” the log with sticks while singing the “Cagatió” song.
• Surprise! The children’s wishes have come true. Underneath the blanket, there are presents and sweets. The Tió de Nadal has “pooped” out gifts for the kids in the house!
