The Tió de Nadal, also known as the Christmas Pooping Log, is a Catalan Christmas tradition with hundreds of years of history. It became popular between the 17th and 18th centuries in towns and villages across Catalonia, Aragon, and Occitania. Many families, after receiving their Tió de Nadal, would burn it in their fireplace to keep warm while spending time with loved ones during Christmas.

Many years have passed since the first Christmas log appeared, but the Tió de Nadal tradition is more alive than ever in Catalonia.

How does the Christmas Pooping Log tradition work?

1. Each home gets a Christmas Pooping Log before Christmas.

2. Children feed the Christmas Pooping Log throughout December with fruit, milk, cookies, and all kinds of food. This way, the log will have a full belly and “poop” lots of presents on Christmas Eve.

3. Families and friends gather together on Christmas Eve.

4. The children recite poems and sing songs while the Tió de Nadal gets ready to “poop” gifts. The Christmas log must be covered with a blanket.

5. Then, the whole family takes turns hitting the log with sticks while singing the traditional Caga Tió song.

6. Surprise! The children’s wishes come true — under the blanket there are gifts and sweets. The Christmas Pooping Log has “pooped” presents for the little ones!
